Old-time lover of this game
Loved it a million years ago when it first came out on PC - now I love it on my mac. Definitely worth the money if you want a strategizing game or loved Civilizations. I’m just waiting for more releases of this game. I think the new Warhammer addition was awesome (cannot wait to try that out), but a Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones version of this game would be ABSOLUTELY incredible. This game would skyrocket - something that I want to happen for this game series because I am such an avid fan.
Does NOT work
This game hasn’t worked on a MacBook Pro in over a year, and has had zero updates to fix it. It will not load on a Mac and you have to “force quit” the app in order to unfreeze your computer. Does not work and needs to be removed from the App Store. In fact, I’m tired of the App Store keeping crap like this in the store and it makes me not trust them. One of the reasons I haven’t upgraded my Iphone, as I’m about done with Apple in general becasue of stuff like this. Things used to work, now everyone is lazy. I paid $20 for this game and can’t even play it like everyone else.

I tested this just now and it worked for me. When your iPhone serial number (S/N) and IMEI appear in the dialog box press the space bar to stop scrolling. IPhone isn't even connected. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/serial-number-on-iphone-5c0bf6cac9e77c000129a4e1.jpg)
Great game but for crashes.
This is a great game and a lot of fun, but it constantly crashes during battles and at the end of turns. I have to save after every turn until the game crashes, then re-load the autosave game and hope that when I end that turn the game won’t tank. Unfortunately now I have two saved files that crash and are unusable - the latest save and the autosave. The game is unplayable. If it were more stable I'd rate this 5 of 5 stars. Don’t waste your money.

Even after almost a year and a half has past, Rome: Total War still remains one of the best strategy games I've played. The combination of both the RTS and turn based aspects of the game, where either gameplay style could stand on its own is still remarkable. If you're buying the Gold Edition, I'm assuming you haven't paid Rome: Total War yet and you're in for a treat. The difference with the Gold Edition however is the inclusion of the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack and of course the latest patches. This review however will focus on the expansion pack as the same gameplay elements are almost identical to Rome: Total War (link above).
Although there may only be tweaks to the gameplay in Barbarian Invasion, the entire dynamic of the empire has changed. Set during the downfall of the Roman Empire, Rome is now fighting for its existence as a number of 'barbarian tribes'? are starting to pick at the once great and stable empire. As you might expect, there are ten new playable factions with unique units reflecting the historical strength of these tribes (Huns are expect horseman). In many cases completely new strategies have to be created as ones that were effective previously are almost useless.
Other new additions include night battles. Not only is watching flaming arrows shoot through the air at night add a different dimension to the battles, but it also fits with at least my vision of barbarians waiting till it gets dark then ransacking cites. Speaking of sacking cites, that can also be done now if you choose in addition to religion playing a strong role now and also the fact the some factions can survive without a settlement in place, allowing them to pop up where you least expect them to.

Honestly, at $40 you can't go wrong here. This is one game that will spend a long time on your hard drive. Don't let its age scare you. Even newer games like Empire at War haven't been able to capture the balance and gameplay quality Rome: Total War has.
